Are you looking to expand your reach and target youth? Are you wondering how to tap into the ever-expansive TikTok market? How do you advertise on TikTok anyways?

According to Oberlo, 41% of TikTok’s 800 million active users are aged 16-24. Out of all users, 9 in 10 report using the app on a daily basis, spending an average of 52 minutes per day on the app. In other words, TikTok is a phenomenal platform to target teenage consumers because not only are they a large share of the platform, but they’re extremely active and always looking at new content.

The first and most official way to advertise through TikTok is to partner with the platform directly. Under the TikTok Ads dashboard, you can create a campaign and personalize with keywords, ad placement choices, and parameters for target audiences. You can also partner with TikTok to start a sponsored hashtag challenge, whereby users are encouraged to create content under your brand’s hashtags. However, working directly with TikTok can cost anywhere from $500 to thousands of dollars, so it may not be the best option if you’re a smaller brand.

Similar to Instagram, TikTok also has its own variety of influencers. With nearly 80 million followers and counting, TikTok’s most popular influencer Charli D’Amelio reportedly makes $25,000 per video, although brands usually pay anywhere from $200 to $20,000 per post depending on the influencer’s following. This is definitely a viable option as Gen Zers have been proven to trust influencers and fellow peers the most when making purchasing decisions.

The last option is one that takes much more work and resilience, but can have a huge payoff without spending a dime. You can try advertising to teens on TikTok by creating a viral video. How do videos go viral on TikTok? The algorithm works in that your video will appear in a limited amount of users’ feeds. If there’s enough engagement (such as likes, comments, shares, or rewatches), TikTok will then release the video to show up on even more people’s feeds. This continues until a video is “viral.” If there isn’t enough engagement, the video simply stops showing up on people’s feeds. Therefore, creating a viral video takes plenty of trial and error until you get the level of engagement that will bring you more viewers. Some ways to create an engaging video are to utilize hashtags, tailor trends to advertise your product in some way, and post consistently!
